How to Prepare for Your Photo Session
Everything you need to know to feel confident and look your best on photo day.
The difference between a good photo session and a great one often comes down to preparation. When you arrive feeling confident, comfortable, and clear about what to expect, your natural personality shines through in every frame. Here is a complete guide to preparing for your upcoming shoot.
Choosing Your Wardrobe
Select outfits that make you feel like the best version of yourself, not clothes you have never worn or trends that do not reflect your personal style. Solid colors and subtle patterns photograph better than busy prints or large logos, which can distract from your face and expressions.
Coordinate rather than match when dressing for group or family sessions. Choose a color palette of two to three complementary tones and let each person express their individual style within that palette. Earth tones, jewel tones, and pastels all photograph beautifully. Avoid neon colors and all-white or all-black ensembles, which can cause exposure challenges.
Bring a second outfit for variety. A quick change between looks gives your final gallery more visual diversity and allows you to choose between two distinct styles. Lay out your complete outfits the night before, including accessories, shoes, and layers, so morning-of decisions do not add stress.
Grooming and Skin Care
Schedule haircuts and color treatments at least one week before your session to allow for natural settling. Avoid trying new skincare products in the days leading up to your shoot, as reactions and breakouts tend to appear at the worst possible time. If you plan to wear makeup, keep it polished but natural; heavy contouring and dramatic eye looks that appear subtle in person can look exaggerated on camera.
For men, trim facial hair the morning of the session or the night before. If you wear glasses, ask your optician about anti-reflective lenses or consider removing your glasses for a portion of the shoot to avoid glare in certain lighting conditions.
What to Expect on Set
A professional photo session is a collaborative experience, not a test. Your photographer will guide you through poses, suggest natural movements, and keep conversation flowing to capture genuine expressions. You do not need to memorize angles or practice faces in the mirror. The most flattering images come from authentic moments: a real laugh, a quiet glance, a natural gesture.
Sessions typically last one to two hours, depending on the package. Arrive fifteen minutes early to settle in, meet your photographer, and discuss any last-minute preferences. Bring water, touch-up supplies, and a positive attitude. If you feel nervous, tell your photographer. We are trained to put you at ease, and acknowledging nerves is the fastest way to move past them.
After the Session
Your photographer will provide a timeline for gallery delivery, usually one to three weeks depending on the scope of the session. Resist the urge to compare raw behind-the-scenes phone snapshots with the final edited images; professional color grading, retouching, and cropping transform the raw captures into the polished portraits you envisioned. Trust the process, and look forward to seeing yourself through your photographer’s lens.
